Some of the best things to do in Dubai this winter cost nothing: the Dubai Fountain, the old Al Fahidi neighbourhood, Alserkal Avenue’s art galleries, the flamingos at Ras Al Khor and the free Dubai Fitness Challenge events. Add a AED 1 abra ride across the Creek and you have a full day out for less than a coffee.

Cooler weather from November makes walking the city a pleasure again. Here are nine free (or almost free) ideas, with the practical details you need.

Quick facts

  • Best free show: the Dubai Fountain, evenings at Burj Lake
  • Best for culture: Al Fahidi and Alserkal Avenue
  • Best for nature: Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary
  • Free this month: Dubai Fitness Challenge, until Sunday 29 November 2026
  • Cheapest ride in town: the traditional abra across Dubai Creek, AED 1

1. Watch the Dubai Fountain

The fountain shows on Burj Lake, at the foot of the Burj Khalifa, are free to watch from the promenade around Dubai Mall and Souk Al Bahar. Evening shows typically run about every 30 minutes from 6pm, with a couple of shows around lunchtime too.

Take the Red Line to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall metro station. Show times can change on public holidays and special occasions, so check Dubai Mall’s channels before you go. The boardwalk and lake rides cost extra; standing on the promenade doesn’t.

2. Get lost in Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood

Dubai’s old quarter by the Creek is a maze of sand-coloured lanes and traditional houses topped with wind towers. There’s no ticket to walk around, and its cafés, small galleries and courtyards are a world away from the malls.

The nearest metro is Al Fahidi on the Green Line. Go in the late afternoon, when the light is softer, then carry on along the Creek towards Al Seef’s waterfront promenade.

3. Ride an abra and browse the old souks

The traditional wooden abra across Dubai Creek costs AED 1 per person per trip, paid in cash on board, according to RTA. The Bur Dubai to Deira Old Souq route runs from 6am to midnight.

On the Deira side, the Spice Souk and Gold Souk are free to wander, and window shopping costs nothing. The crossing itself is one of the best views of old Dubai.

4. Explore the galleries at Alserkal Avenue

Alserkal Avenue in Al Quoz 1 is Dubai’s arts district, a cluster of converted warehouses holding contemporary art galleries, independent shops and studios. General entry is free, and most gallery exhibitions are too.

Opening hours vary by gallery, and some close one day a week, so check before you go. Some special events and screenings are ticketed. Check the Alserkal website for what’s on.

5. See the flamingos at Ras Al Khor

Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, at the inland end of Dubai Creek, is a protected wetland where you can watch flamingos and other water birds against the city skyline. It’s free, and families and individuals don’t need to book.

You’ll need to register on arrival as a walk-in visitor, and security may ask to see your Emirates ID. The Flamingo Hide and Lagoon Hide are listed as open, while the Mangrove Hide is temporarily closed, according to Dubai Municipality. Bring binoculars if you have them, and visit during daytime opening hours.

6. Join the Dubai Fitness Challenge

The 10th Dubai Fitness Challenge runs from Saturday 31 October to Sunday 29 November 2026. The idea is simple: 30 minutes of activity a day for 30 days, with free classes across the city.

There are three free Fitness Villages and more than 23 Community Fitness Hubs offering workouts, plus the big community events:

  • Dubai Stand-Up Paddle: Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November, Hatta Dam
  • Dubai Run: Sunday 22 November
  • Dubai Yoga: Sunday 29 November

Registration for the challenge is free on the official Dubai Fitness Challenge website, and some headline events need their own sign-up, so register early.

7. Swim at night on a public beach

Dubai Municipality runs three lit night-swimming beaches, at Jumeirah 2, Jumeirah 3 and Umm Suqeim 1, with lifeguards on duty. Swimming hours there run from sunset to sunrise.

By day, Dubai’s public beaches are free too. Kite Beach and the public stretch at JBR are the busiest. Swim only where lifeguards are on duty and follow the flags.

8. Go to Al Qudra Lakes

Out in the desert off the Al Qudra Road, a chain of man-made lakes draws birds, cyclists and families having picnics. There’s no entry fee, but you need a car, ideally one you’re comfortable driving on sandy tracks.

Go in the late afternoon for sunset, bring water and snacks, and take every bit of rubbish home with you.

9. Walk Dubai Marina and JBR

The Dubai Marina promenade loops for several kilometres around the water, past yachts and skyscrapers, and connects to The Walk at JBR and the beach. It’s free, flat and lively from late afternoon onwards.

The Red Line metro and the Dubai Tram both serve the Marina, so you can skip the parking hassle.

Tips for a free day out

Use a nol card and public transport to keep costs low. Carry water, because shops near the free sights can be pricey. And remember that “free” spots are still public places: dress respectfully in the old neighbourhoods and souks, and follow any posted rules.
